FAQ

Q1: Can this lightweight 50W panel be mounted directly onto a canvas boat bimini top or an RV awning?
A1:
Not directly with screws, but we offer a customization with reinforced, sewn-in grommets along the frame's edge. For canvas mounting, we recommend our semi-flexible 50W panel option (available on request) that weighs under 2kg and can be glued or zipped onto fabric. The rigid glass panel is too heavy for most fabric awnings. Please specify “marine canvas mount” when inquiring.
Q2: Can I carry this 50W rigid solar panel as checked luggage on a passenger airplane?
A2:
Possibly, but it is not recommended and often restricted. Most airlines prohibit large lithium batteries but have ambiguous rules for solar panels. The main issue is the tempered glass – it can be considered a hazard if broken. We strongly suggest shipping the panel via ground freight. For air travel, ask us about our flexible 50W panel (no glass) which is much more likely to be allowed.
Q3: How much power will I lose if this panel is installed on a hot metal roof in summer (e.g., 60°C/140°F surface temperature)?
A3:
Significant loss, but it's normal. For mono-crystalline silicon, the temperature coefficient of power (Pmax) is typically -0.40%/°C. At 60°C cell temperature (35°C above STC's 25°C), you lose roughly 14% of rated power (50W becomes ~43W). Ensure at least 5cm (2 inches) of air gap between the panel and the roof for cooling. This is a physics limitation, not a quality issue.
Q4: Can I run a small solar fountain pump directly from this 50W panel without a battery?
A4:
Yes, and that's an excellent application. However, 50W is overkill for most tiny fountain pumps (which use 5-15W). This panel will spin the pump very fast in full sun. To avoid damaging a small pump, you can either: (a) use a PWM motor speed controller (inexpensive), or (b) simply angle the panel partially away from the sun to reduce power. Better yet, consider our 20W panel for small fountains. Please check your pump's maximum voltage rating first.
Q5: Can you pre-drill a standard 1/4″-20 threaded hole in the frame so I can mount this panel on a camera tripod?
A5:
Yes – a unique but very useful customization for field researchers, campers, or disaster responders. We can add a stainless steel 1/4″-20 nut (or 3/8″-16) directly into the bottom center of the aluminum frame, allowing you to screw the panel onto any standard camera or light stand tripod. This creates a highly portable, aimable ground station. Please request "tripod mount customization" when ordering.
Q6: Can you assemble two 50W panels, a controller, and output ports into a portable "solar suitcase" for classroom teaching?
A6:
Absolutely – this is a customization specialty. We can hinge two 50W panels together, pre-wire a 10A PWM controller, add a sturdy carrying handle, alligator clip outputs, and clear acrylic corner protectors. When folded, it's about the size of a briefcase (approx. 700×540×50mm or 27.6″×21.3″×2″), perfect for middle/high school physics demonstrations of renewable energy. Specify "school suitcase kit" when requesting a quote.
